Tinnitus & Veterans
Vets are at high risk of tinnitus.
Tinnitus is the top military service related disability experienced by American veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Not surprising, considering one of the best known causes of tinnitus is exposure to an extremely loud noise.
Dangerously high decibels.
Even a single exposure to an explosive or firearm report can result in permanent injury to the delicate inner ear. Being near any sound louder than 85 decibels (dB) is risky, particularly if such exposure occurs repeatedly. Service men and women are frequently around noise well in excess of this threshold, including helicopters (104 dB), jets (140 dB), tanks (180 dB), explosives (140+ dB) and more.
